Many South African pensioners are dependent on the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) old-age grant. However, this is just not enough when one takes into account, the increased amount as of 1 October 2023, and the last few years of increased costs across the board.   This, we believe, is one of the reasons why many retailers and establishments have made it their business to assist older citizens, by offering them pensioner discounts on products or services.

We’ve put together a comprehensive breakdown of retail categories and the various offerings from well-loved brands across South Africa. But there may be some confusion as to what exactly is a pensioner, and how do you qualify for a pensioner discount? 

What is a pensioner and how to qualify for a discount?

Anyone in South Africa who is over the age of 60 can, in essence, be called a pensioner whether they continue working or not. Not everyone, however, who is over that age may claim their pensions or old age grants, as these can only be claimed once you have stopped working.

In order to qualify for a pensioner discount, you need to meet the qualifying criteria of the individual retailers, who each decide at what age you qualify (some retailers will provide discounts for over 55’s, some over 60 and some even over 65).  Each retailer may have different requirements for providing proof of qualification, so be sure to check beforehand..

SASSA old age grants

To qualify as a SASSA pensioner, you must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee, and live in South Africa. You also must not:

• Receive any other social grant for yourself
• Be cared for in a state institution
• Earn more than R86,280 per annum if you are single or R172,560 if married.
• Have assets worth more than R1,227,600 if you are single or R2,455,200 if you are married.

To apply for a SASSA card, visit the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office nearest to where you live along with your 13-digit bar-coded identity document.

What if I don’t have a SASSA card?

Not every pensioner special requires you to be on an Older Persons Grant. There are many retailers and institutions that simply need your ID to prove you are at the required age to qualify for their special offer.
