“When we take the time to preserve our memories and plan our wishes, we leave more than instructions, we leave a legacy of love, guidance, and peace of mind.”— Lisa

Each year, we tidy our homes, update our calendars, and set new goals. But how often do we pause to review our lives? Not only what we have done or where we are going, but how we can bring peace to ourselves and those we love?

As an End of Life Doula and Moment Mentor, I help people reflect, plan, and prepare for life in all its fullness. One of the most powerful tools I use is the Life Review and Planning process. It’s not just for those nearing the end of life it’s for anyone who wants to live more intentionally, ease the burden on loved ones, and create a sense of calm around the unknown.

What is a life review?
A life review is more than looking back at the year that’s passed. It’s about putting your life in order in ways that truly matter. This can include:

Life reflections and stories – capturing memories, lessons, and milestones so they’re not lost.
Values and priorities – clarifying what matters most to you now and in the future.
Important documents – keeping your ID, will, insurance, and financial details up to date.
Digital legacy – deciding what happens to your online accounts, photos, and digital assets.
Letters and messages – writing words of love, gratitude, or guidance to those who mean the most to you.
Funeral and remembrance wishes – from the type of farewell you would like, to the music or rituals that reflect your life.
Advance Directives & Medical Proxy – recording your healthcare wishes and appointing someone you trust to speak for you if you cannot.

When these pieces are thoughtfully gathered, it’s not about preparing for death it’s about living with clarity and confidence today, knowing that if tomorrow comes unexpectedly, your wishes and your stories are safe.

Why it matters
I have sat with families who were left with questions, confusion and unsure of what their loved one wanted, where documents were kept, or even what kind of farewell would feel right. In those moments, grief becomes heavier because of the confusion and chaos.

On the other hand, I have also seen the peace that comes when someone has done this work. Families can be present in their grief without having to second guess or run around. They can honour their loved one’s voice, even in their absence. They often say: “This is the greatest gift they left us.”

Advance Directives and a Medical Proxy are especially powerful components of a life review. They remove the burden of guesswork during a crisis, giving your family peace of mind that decisions are guided by your values. They are acts of love, protecting your loved ones from doubt, while ensuring that your voice is heard and your autonomy is maintained.

A conversation of love
Many people avoid these conversations, fearing they are too heavy. But once we begin, there’s often a deep sigh of relief. These aren’t conversations about endings they are conversations about love, legacy, and peace.

By reviewing your life each year, you also give yourself the chance to reset. To celebrate what you have achieved, let go of what no longer serves you, and make space for the life you still want to live.

A gentle invitation
Imagine ending the year with your story captured, your wishes known, and your plans in place. Imagine the peace of knowing your loved ones will never have to wonder what you would have wanted. This isn’t about paperwork alone. It’s about weaving together the practical with the deeply personal. It’s about creating both a map for your loved ones and a mirror for yourself. It’s the perfect Gift of Living.
