Womens Day 1200

With August being Women’s Month,
YEI decided to honour five of YEI’s top fans

Ginny du Toit

Ginny, 77, from Mossel Bay is a fan of YEI because of the interesting and informative YEI articles. She loves the competitions and other people’s viewpoints which often give her a different perspective!  Ginny’s beloved husband died just over 5 years ago. She stayed put in White River for a year and then decided to kickstart her life. She moved to the beautiful town of Mossel Bay – from bush to beach! She bought a 9 bedroom, 125 year old double story house and together with her sister spent a year renovating, and then let out rooms etc. She lost around 12kg, got fitter & loved it. A year went by and it was time for another change. Ginny bought a Life Rights place in a retirement village, which left her free to travel and pursue hobbies. Her children and grandchildren and soon to be great grandchildren live overseas, so travel is a priority! Ginny loves photography, birding, wildlife & also started hiking (though about 7km is her limit). And she loves her little garden! Lockdown has been a real challenge for Ginny, so she decided that instead of doing 67 minutes for Mandela, she would do 67 Jars of Hope. This kept her occupied for most of July. Ginny also started a 12 o’clock prayer time which has a specific focus and also helps to keep the folk in the retirement village connected. Ginny says – Stay fit, stay healthy and never lose hope.

Martie Schoeman

Martie Schoeman Martie, 68, is a retired bookkeeper from Roodepoort in Johannesburg.  Martie has told us that she loves YEI as it is specifically geared at the over-60s, and being over-60 “we are all on the same page of our lives”.  Martie loves the information that YEI supplies especially the pensioner discounts, the travel deals and the competitions, and says “Thank you for a great page”!  Martie loves to explore new places, travel, enjoys fine dining, the theatre and festivals.  Martie married her first boyfriend back in 1965 and has been married for 48 years now.  Hubby is now 70 and a keen golfer.  Two sons, one daughter, and two grandchildren – 12 and 7 make up Martie’s family.   Granny loves to help her grandchildren with home schooling.

Mercia Clarke

Mercia ClarkeMercia, a 77 year old, is a self-confessed Elvis Presley groupie!  Mercia is a SASSA pensioner, a grandmother, and a great grandmother.  She is originally from Kwa-Zulu Natal, then spent many years in Namibia, and now lives in Lakeside in Cape Town.   Mercia told us that she always looks forward to the YEI newsletter, as she likes to keep up to date with what’s happening in the world of seniors.  She believes it keeps her mind active and asks YEI to keep up the good work! (We will try, Mercia!)  Mercia lives with her daughter in a garage-converted flatlet and loves having her own space.   She says that 2020 has been a busy year, dominated by Coronavirus and staying home, but she has also enjoyed weddings and engagements.  My granddaughter married in February, and my new grandson-in-law likes to sneak me Lunchbars every time he visits!  My grandson got engaged over lock down and hopes to marry later in the year and so I have a new granddaughter-in-law who wants  me to teach her to bake and knit.  My passion in life is knitting, sewing and crocheting. My faith is very important to me – without my faith, I don’t believe I would have been able to cope with all the changes and stresses in our new reality. It has really been an encouragement that we have still been able to attend our services via zoom.  I have not missed a Sunday during Lockdown and I love to chat with members of the  Congregation both young and old  – it bolsters  my faith

Val Tweedie

Val TweedieHere is Val Tweedie from Grahamstown.  Val is a 70 year old wife, mother of 3, grandmother of 4.  Val was born, raised and got married in Johannesburg.   Val was a stay-at-home mom and a member of a Home Industry doing knitting orders until 1997, when she became a School Secretary for 10 years.  Before Lockdown Val was very involved with her grandchildrens’  lives.  She helped her daughter fetching and carrying the children to and from school.  She attended all of their school sports events and functions.  Because of Lockdown, Val is so missing the contact with her grandchildren, but has immersed herself in cooking, baking, reading.  She loves her garden and watching most forms of sport, live or on TV.  She can’t wait to go on holiday again. Val is one YEI’s Top Fans.  She says “YEI is an all-round go to Information Centre, keeping me abreast of current topics of interest pertaining to seniors.  I love the regular newsletter always brimming full of interesting articles, helpful information, competitions and fun games too. Thank you YEI for everything”.

Joey Meyer

Joey MeyerAnd last, but not least, here is Joey Meyer from the KZN South Coast.  Joey is 74 and has been married for 53 years to Peter  (Wow, Joey, that is fantastic!  Congratulations from all at YEI!).  Joey and Peter lived in Pietermaritzburg for 40 years until they moved to the South Coast.  Joey really enjoys being part of YEI and finds the content and the offers so interesting.  Joey wishes all of you wonderful YEI members a very HAPPY WOMEN’S MONTH!!  🌹🌺
