The Wild Coast is also known as the Transkei. Most SA seniors will remember that the Transkei Wild Coast is a 250 km long stretch of coastline epitomizing rural South Africa at its best. Rolling green hills dotted with thatched rondavels, fishermans cottages, magnificent hiking trails, unforgettable and footprint-free beaches, shipwrecks, waterfalls. All of this and so much more coupled with a great climate, hot summers and mild dry winters, making it the perfect holiday destination for SA seniors.
And if a chilled, laid-back holiday is not enough, activities abound such as magnificent hiking trails, angling, deep-sea fishing, golf, game viewing, bird watching, mountain biking and so the list goes on. Even in the winter months, the Wild Coast is blessed with amazing weather, and this is when the Sardine Run creates a feeding frenzy along the coastline. Humpback and Southern Right Whales, and dolphins, migrate from the Antarctic to these shores and are regularly seen from high vantage points along the coastline.
Pre-Lockdown, YEI members, Lyn and Rob were at Mazeppa Bay Hotel, and loved the unique and quirky sight of Transkei cows on the beaches. Herds of cattle love to come down to the beach to sleep, relax and chew the cud! Only in Africa!

Did you know that senior people are now fitter than ever before? In a Finnish research study, it was found that senior people walk up to 33% faster now than pensioners 30 yeas ago! All due to better medicine, better diet and good hygiene and fitness levels. So on that note, how about this for a bucket list adventure – The Wild Coast Meander. And you don’t have to walk fast – you walk at your own pace. The Meander is a 5-night, 4-day hiking and hotel trail and has been running for more than 30 years. It’s very popular! Starting at Kob Inn and finishing at Morgan Bay, all you need to do is walk – bags are transported by porters, and dinner, bed and breakfast, and packed lunches are provided by the hotels. The Meander is fully guided and has a shuttle service. The Meander route follows the long sandy beaches that characterise this neck of the Wild Coast woods. A Mini Meander is also on offer.
