Grandparents Day should be a big deal

We are great proponents of Grandparents Day
– what a perfect opportunity to celebrate those grannies, grandpas, gogos, umkhulus,  umakhulus, oumas, oupas,
nonnas….grandparents that are highly appreciated
for all the joy and wisdom that they bring to our lives!

Am I the only Grandparent who missed Grandparents Day on October 6th?
What a crying shame!
Next year, I will be sending reminders two weeks in advance, along with a gift registry.

We should celebrate Grandparents Day.

In fact, I think we should make a big deal out of it.
Think about it – the relationship between a grandparent and a grandchild is one of the most loving, sweetest and functional relationships you can ever find.

What do I mean? Well, look at it this way: It’s a mutually beneficial relationship. As ‘gran’, and a pensioner, I have a lot more time to listen to my grandchildren’s stories about anything and everything that is often absolutely nothing. On their side, they have, in me, an adult friend who actually has time (all day in fact) and can actually dish out wisdom collected over a period of over 65 years – free of charge.

Is there a better way to get to know each other?
And form firm bonds?
My 11 year old granddaughter now calls me her “BFF” (Best Friend for Life).

So, I suggest that Grandparent’s Day should be celebrated
in the same vein as the likes of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

So next year, on Grandparents, expect a gift.
Or better still, call for one.
Remind everybody that your day, as grandparent,
is coming and you are expecting many gifts.
