Your Guide To Flower Season In The Cederberg
– About the flowers in the Cederberg area:
The Cederberg has the power to make you fall in love with it over and over again,
each time you visit. It has an exceptional botanical diversity, with the largest variety of wild flower species, many growing nowhere else in the world. The experience here is not like your typical Cape Flower Season one. Don’t expect large areas carpeted in flowers, here the search for flower-treasures is a little more challenging, but oh-so-much-fun!
The splashes of colour occur amongst the other vegetation and are dotted over more widespread areas. But, the rewards are great with many rare jewels – not found anywhere else on earth – to be discovered.
– Explore the beauty and wilderness:
The Cederberg is one of the best areas to view ancient Rock Art sites in the world and is known for its red-brown weathered sandstone formations. Plants are described as Drier Mountain Fynbos and you can see for miles because the area is largely tree-less. This area is also home to many antelope, bird and smaller animal species.
– Where is the Cederberg?
The Cederberg is about a two to two-and-a-half hour drive
from Cape Town in the Western Cape.
– What type of car do I need?
You do not need a 4×4 vehicle to visit the Cederberg area.
The main roads are tarred
but many of the attractions of this mountainous region take you onto gravel roads.
– What to pack for flower season:
The Cederberg has a great climate – hot sunny days throughout summer and mild, often sunny days in winter. Spring is generally sunny and warm with some cooler weather, and the evenings are generally still cool to cold. It can be warm during the day, so short-sleeves are good, a warm jacket for the evenings, a rain jacket in case it rains and comfortable shoes or sandals in which you can walk easily over uneven ground.
Flowers have a way of changing the way we view the world. Flowers are more than beautiful objects to look at or embellish our world with; flowering plants provide us and the rest of the animal world with the nourishment that is fundamental to our existence. They serve a very important purpose in the ecosystem and in the greater circle of life.
We look forward to welcoming you to Kagga Kamma
and sharing an every-growing and blooming landscape of flowers with you.
