What Legacy Really Means Today

As the year draws to a close, many of you may be reflecting on the journey that has been. What have you accomplished? What has been lost or gained? Did those 2025 resolutions come to fruition or was it, perhaps, a total flop?

I have recently been having many conversations around the subject of legacy. When we hear the word legacy, most of us immediately think of what is left behind. Money, possessions or perhaps our reputation. The Oxford English Dictionary defines legacy as “something handed down by a predecessor or left in a will.”

For generations, that is how most people have understood it. Something tangible that can be inherited or admired. Personally, I believe legacy has evolved into something far more meaningful. Today, legacy is not just about what remains when we are gone. It is about how we live right now. It is found in the quiet moments we share, the lessons we pass on and the love we express through simple, everyday actions.

Wisdom from Pericles and Maya Angelou

Centuries ago, the Greek statesman Pericles captured this truth beautifully when he said:
“What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”
Pericles led Athens during its Golden Age, around 460 to 429 B.C., a time of great art, philosophy and wisdom. Even in ancient times, he understood that our most enduring legacy is not carved in stone or written in history books. It lives on through the people we touch, the stories we tell and the connections we create.

Many generations later, the beloved poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, 1928 to 2014, reminded us of this same truth when she said:
“Your legacy is every life you have touched.”

Those words resonate deeply with me. They remind us that legacy is not measured by what we achieve. It is measured by how we connect. It is not the accolades or titles that linger, but the kindness, courage and compassion that ripple through the lives of others long after we are gone.

Why Our Legacy Deepens as We Grow Older

As we grow older, our understanding of legacy deepens. It becomes less about the things we leave and more about the memories we create, the laughter we share, the hugs we give and the wisdom we impart. Legacy is built in moments, not milestones.

Storytelling as the Heart of Legacy

At its heart, legacy is storytelling. It is how we bring our experiences to life through family tales told around the dinner table, recipes passed down with love and photographs that hold a sparkle of memory. These are not trivial things. They are living treasures. Each one holds meaning and together they weave the story of who we are.

So many of us carry a lifetime of stories waiting to be told. Moments of triumph, heartbreak, growth and joy. Each one has value. Each one deserves a voice. When we share them, we do not just revisit the past. We keep our stories alive for the future.

How to Begin Your Living Legacy Storytelling Journey

This is why I encourage people to begin what I call their storytelling journey. It does not have to be formal or perfect. You might start by jotting down a few memories, recording your voice as you tell a story from your youth, or sitting with loved ones and saying, “Did I ever tell you about the time?”

These stories are powerful. They remind future generations where they come from, what resilience looks like and how love endures. They are the threads that connect our history to the hearts of those who follow.

Your Legacy Lives in the Lives You Touch

Legacy is not built from material things. It is built from meaning. It is present in every act of kindness, every shared laugh and every moment of presence. Each story told and each word of wisdom shared becomes part of the tapestry of life that carries your name.

The most beautiful truth is this. Your legacy lives on in others long after you have gone. It lives in their laughter when they remember you, in their cooking when they use your recipe and in their hearts when your words echo at just the right moment.
