Cape Ballet Africa adds extra Swan Lake performances in Johannesburg due to overwhelming demand
Cape Ballet Africa, along with Global Star Events, has added extra performances to its Johannesburg run of Swan Lake at the Teatro, Montecasino, due to extraordinary demand for tickets for the production’s initial dates.
Now, in addition to the limited run beginning on Friday, 7 August, fans of the world’s most loved ballet also have the opportunity to watch Elena Glurjidze’s choreography of Tchaikovsky’s crown jewel on Saturday, 22 August at 13:00 and 17:30, and Sunday, 23 August at 13:00.

Swan Lake remains the pinnacle of classical ballet – a timeless tale of love, magic and sacrifice. In the lead roles, Prince Siegfried’s heart is captured by Odette, a princess cursed to live as a swan by day. Their fates entwine in a powerful struggle against evil, where love must prove stronger than the sorcery that seeks to tear them apart. It is a masterpiece that has captivated audiences for generations, set to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent and soaring score, weaving together elements of passion, betrayal and eternal devotion.

This Cape Ballet Africa production brings dramatic intensity and elegance from a company celebrated for artistic excellence and expressive storytelling.
The cherished classic is accorded the opulent sets and sumptuous costumes its iconic choreography deserves, creating a ballet experience designed to stir the soul and leave audiences breathless. International ballet star Elena Glurjidze leads the production. Georgian-born, London-based Elena Glurjidze arrived in South Africa this last week to work with the 50-strong company on this new production of Swan Lake, for which she is providing choreography and stage direction.
A former Lead Principal Ballerina with the English National Ballet, Glurjidze performed her final Odette/Odile in Derek Deane’s Swan Lake at the London Coliseum on 18 January 2015, in a role she first danced with the company in 2002.
Receiving accolades such as “Hauntingly and compellingly beautiful in performance” (The Observer), Glurjidze later founded the Masters of Ballet Academy in London. Many of her students have gone on to train at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including the Royal Ballet Upper School, Vaganova Academy, Bolshoi Academy, Dutch National Ballet School, John Cranko School and Berlin State Ballet School.
A career rooted in excellence
Proud of her Georgian heritage, Glurjidze has long promoted her country’s culture and was awarded a State Ministry of Georgian Affairs Certificate of Honour for her contribution.
She entered the renowned Vaganova Academy in St Petersburg at the age of 12 as a student of celebrated Russian ballerina Lubov Kunakova, before joining the English National Ballet as a Principal Ballerina in 2002.
Her extensive repertoire includes principal roles in Giselle, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Romeo & Juliet, Cinderella, Coppélia, Manon, The Snow Queen, Chopiniana, Etudes and Schéhérazade.
Award-Nominated creative team returns
The costumes for Cape Ballet Africa’s Swan Lake are designed by Marcel Meyer, with stunning sets by Michael Mitchell.
The pair also created the acclaimed designs for Cape Ballet Africa’s double Naledi Award-nominated production of The Nutcracker, bringing the same grandeur and visual splendour to this latest staging.
