Senor woman fitness 1200

In these odd times where we continue to navigate this “New Normal”, there is a growing group of seniors who have decided to make this their “Better Normal” and they are doing so ONLINE.  Meet Sandy, a Silver Fit member;  “I’m thrilled to be able to do my exercise classes online from the comfort of my own home, initially, I was unsure – but I have been given the technical guidance that has empowered me to do a wider variety of exercise classes, more often, with people all over the country- it’s incredible.”

This community of older adults who call themselves the Silver Fitter’s, have decided to prioritise their strength and fitness and as a result, they are seeing their quality of life improve. Eric explains how he chooses between cardio and strength classes for the days he is feeling energetic, and then he makes use of the stretch classes when he feels like focusing on his flexibility.

When the pandemic hit, we were all asked to stay home and stay apart. Who would have thought exercise could be offered online? We are accustomed to traditional fitness classes or gyms where we have to get ourselves to at a certain time.  Well, I tell you, it’s been a revolution! At the tips of your fingers (literally) you can discover a world where people across the globe – young and old – are accessing their dose of exercise via their computer, tablet, or even casting it from their mobile phone onto their TV’s. Agreeing with Sandy, Silver Fit’s Founder Hannah Raath explains; “It’s been incredible.  We have been blown away by our member’s interest in our live-online and pre-recorded exercise classes, and we can now reach people no matter where they live.  We are excited to watch this boomer generation embrace what we call active ageing, the rewards to their health are unmatched”

Opting for a wider variety of exercise classes, with different instructors, and meeting people from all over the country – hats off to this incredible community of older adults who have embraced the change and as a result, thriving in their “Better Normal”.

Silver Fit’s Tips for exercising online:

  • If you are not sure how to get online – ask for help. Get your kids or grandkids involved and ask them to show you the ropes.  Or phone a friend! They will be so proud to see what you are up to online.
  • Make sure you have a reliable internet connection and that your hardware is not outdated.
  • Dedicate a specific time of the day to your online exercise routine, this helps us create healthy habits.
  • Be honest with yourself, and stop making excuses. If you are currently not exercising- well this is time to start. Exercise is vital.  Use it or lose it. That simple.

Exercise is so important, especially for older adults.  Research has shown that older adults who engage in regular exercise have a reduced risk of developing chronic conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, and various cancers.  Exercise has been shown to have positive effects on cognitive and physical functions, as well as on mobility and stability. Older adults who exercise regularly have a  reduced risk of falling and fractures, improve the ability to carry out day-to-day activities and increase their confidence and independence.  When one has an active lifestyle, one can enjoy an improved quality of life in the later years.
