Of course, when you are watching your blood sugar levels, carbs have the greatest effect on blood sugar so that’s the nutrient to watch. That’s because your body breaks down carbs into sugar, which enters your bloodstream. 1

An individualised approach is often best when it comes to carb intake for diabetes management. It’s important to eat the number of carbs at which you feel best and that you can realistically maintain in the long term. 1

Foods with a low Glycaemic Index (GI) value are the preferred choice. They are slowly digested and absorbed, causing a slower and smaller rise in blood sugar levels. The GI or glycaemic index is a ranking system that classifies carb-containing foods by their effect on blood sugar levels.

On the other hand, foods with a high GI value should be limited. They’re quickly digested and absorbed resulting in a rapid rise and fall of blood sugar levels. 2

Keep these factors in mind that can influence the GI value of food or a meal:

The type of sugar food contains. There is a misconception that all sugars have a high GI. The GI of sugar ranges from as low as 23 for fructose and up to 105 for maltose
How refined a carb is. Processing methods raise the GI
Nutrient composition. Adding protein or fat to a meal slows down digestion and helps reduce the glycaemic response to a meal
Cooking method. The longer a food is cooked, the faster its sugars will be digested and absorbed, raising the GI
Ripeness. The riper the fruit the higher its GI2

Some low GI foods include wholegrain bread, bran flakes, apples, strawberries and tomatoes, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, lentils and chickpeas, sweet potatoes with orange flesh, basmati and brown rice, as well as milk, cheese and yoghurt.  2

Although I am not diabetic, I found Replace Classic to be an ideal meal after having oral-maxillary surgery five years ago. I was unable to eat for a number of months. Replace kept me alive and I am still using it at this time. It is not only a good substitute for a regular meal, it tastes great and is easy to prepare especially if you have a blender.
