We love to spoil our little treasures at Christmas-time!
But perhaps your budget just does not extend enough
to be able to spoil them in the way you would like?
Take a look at YEI’s thoughts on a selection
of cost-effective and novel Christmas gifts for grandchildren…
We love to spoil the little people in our lives! The joys of being a grandparent is just spending time with the munchkins, enjoying those special times and watching them learn and grow! And we can send them back! After all, there is a reason why little ones are born to young people!
And now it’s Christmas, and we would love to spoil our little treasures. But perhaps your budget just does not extend enough to be able to spoil them in the way you would like.
Here are some thoughts on a selection of cost-effective and novel Christmas gifts…
Write your life story
You may not be in time to give such a present this Christmas, but why not set a goal for next Christmas. Commit pen to paper, and start writing up all those stories that you can remember from your childhood to grandparentdom. The Memoir Revolution is becoming very popular amongst seniors and writing up your life story is a wonderful legacy to leave your children and your grandchildren.
Write an individual letter to your grandchild
Probably best to include this with a gift, especially if your grandchildren are little, but a personal letter to each grandchild outlining why they are special to you is something that they will treasure forever.
How about making a recording of you reading all those stories you used to love as a child. You could also record wonderful family stories for your grandchildren as well. Your grandchildren will love listening to these.
Give your grandchild a Christmas coupon
It could be an afternoon coupon, or an overnight coupon – stating what will be involved. Either dinner at a restaurant, or teaching them to make a popular family recipe, baking biscuits, a movie and popcorn. Let your imagination run wild! Spending time with your grandchildren is probably the best present you can give them. And how about documenting all of your outings, and writing a book titled something like “Adventures with Grandpa/Granny”! A gift that will stand the test of time.
Give your grandchildren a gift of a
Kids Tax-Free Share portfolio this festive season
Consider gifting your grandchildren with a share portfolio which will have far-reaching benefits for them in the long-term. Your early investment in shares can help pay for your grandchild’s first car, university fees, give them an opportunity to travel or even take a gap year.
A Gift of Experience
How about an experience-based gift – a ticket to a sporting event, a subscription to a favourite magazine, a ticket to a day at the zoo or museum.
Introduce your grandchild to charitable giving
Sign up at a local animal shelter together, or some kind of charity that is close to your heart and volunteer time together. Or explore charities with your grandchild and find out which charity resonates with your little treasure and then suggest a cash gift (regular or once-off) which can be donated in his/her name.
Savings account in their name
Start a savings account in your grandchild’s name, and tell him/her that you will match whatever they can manage to put in the savings account. This may inspire them to set a savings goal for something special.
Is there something your grandchild really wants to do, but his/her parents cannot afford? Piano lessons, karate, dance lessons, etc? How about covering these fees for the year to enable them to do something they love?
