Now, I’m retired.. Now, what..?
Never fear, South African seniorpreneurs are on the rise,
and be it by choice or necessity,
seniors are utilising their amassed wisdom, experience, initiative, skills and knowledge in order to make a living and supplement their pension.
You are only limited by your imagination.
Here are five work-from-home jobs for you to consider:
Rent out your space and run an AirBnB, a B&B or guesthouse
If you have extra rooms in your home, why not put them to use and rent them out. You can earn extra cash by hosting people from around South Africa or from abroad on a per night, daily or monthly basis. Airbnb reports that seniors (hosts and guests aged 60 and older) have been a growing and integral part of the Airbnb community for some time now. The senior hosts are earning important extra income, and continuing to be the most popular host/guest age group. Senior guests are travelling beyond traditional tourist districts and like to experience local, authentic neighbourhoods.
If you have an empty garage or driveway, you could even rent space to neighbours – people are often looking for places to park their cars securely behind gates and off the main drag. Do you have an outside room or garage that you could let as storage space?
Start a Rent-A-Gran/Grandpa service
Let your imagination go wild. This could include a myriad of opportunities – from babysitting, childminding, housesitting to pet sitting or dog walking. You could assist young parents with children – do au pair work, after school care, tutoring, transport services. You could assist the elderly or those in need through caregiving, assisting with hospital visits or shopping, being a companion, offering cooked meals, handyman work, home décor etc
Become a Pet-staycation host
Are you a pet-lover? Here’s a perfect way to enjoy the companionship of pets without owning them! The trend is becoming more and more for pet owners to leave their beloved pets either at home with a house-sitter or at a pet boarding hotel. Host as many pets as you can manage while their owners take off during school holidays or on their annual holiday.
Start your own At-Home-Chef business
If you are a keen baker or cook, you will be surprised at how much demand you are in. The majority of parents with children at school now work and just don’t have the time, the energy or the inclination to cook a family meal when they get home. Life is a rush, so to have on-tap meals is a joy! Make up a menu of your specialities, check out your costs, get the idea out there and watch the orders rolling in. Hopefully you will start to enjoy cooking again, when you see the appreciation from others.
Selling your crafts
If you have a particular passion in the arts and crafts world, consider selling your wares at craft fairs, markets in your area or check out the sites Hello Pretty or The Online Craft Market. Budding photographers can check out stock sites like Shutterstock to find out how they can sell their high-quality images and videos. You could even become an online store owner! Set up a virtual store selling your crafts, or even refurbished electronics, antiques or collectables.
And once you have decided what route you are going to follow,
you need to have some kind of online presence,
albeit a one-page website and/or Facebook page.
And if this sends you skittering off into the moonlight,
again never fear,
