Greetings YEI readers
Update on grandfather’s epic cycling trip
In the last issue, we published an article titled 66-year old grandfather undertakes epic cycle trip to the East (click here to read the article). We received an email from YEI readers, Judy and Gerry Norris, who told us that they too were currently travelling through South East Asia by train, bus and tuk tuk, and that they had met up with Elred, the cyclist, at the renown Raffles Hotel in Singapore for a farewell Singapore Sling! Small world! YEI will be following both trips with interest.
Your opinion please. Animal encounters – are they ethical?
YEI has recently featured two very different wild life parks, who offer activities such as animal interactions, and guided game drives or tours. YEI has mixed feelings about featuring such places. On the one hand, we are bush-lovers and take every opportunity to travel to the bush as we are passionate about wildlife. On the other hand, we do understand that there is an educational spin-off for places such as rehabilitation centres, sanctuaries etc. Who wouldn’t enjoy seeing a child’s face light up when they are in close proximity to an animal they have never had the opportunity of seeing? There are many good people out there who are lavishing care on orphaned and injured wild animals. It’s a completely different story when one knows that healthy animals are bred or sold into a life of captivity and to make someone a profit. We do believe that there is merit in the statement from the NSPCA Wildlife Protection Unit ‘There is absolutely no ethical or conservation-based reason to breed large predators in captivity in South Africa’.
It’s a difficult conversation. Having said that, a YEI reader recently unleashed her concerns about featuring wild life parks where animal interaction is involved. We would welcome your opinion on wild life parks offering animal encounters? Please send your comments to firstname.lastname@example.org.
