Can I belong to two medical aids?
A YEI member posed this interesting question. YEI didn’t think one could belong to two medical aids, but went to research this to make sure of our answer. We have come up with the following:
Many people find the idea of belonging to more than one medical aid scheme quite attractive. Of course, this could seem to make perfect sense because if you run out of funds on one medical aid scheme, the second scheme could cover the shortfall. If you can afford it then belonging to two medical aids may seem like the perfect solution. However, belonging to more than one medical aid is considered to be a form of fraud and, by law, is not allowed.
Costs/pricing on YEI listings
YEI member: It would be really useful to provide pricing on all offers rather than saying that you will refer the enquiry to the supplier.
YEI: YEI has taken the decision not to include costs/pricing in the YEI listings. The reason for this is, that a business/organisation could change their costs at any time and inadvertently do not advise YEI. YEI is therefore advertising incorrect information. To solve this issue, we do wherever possible, put a link through to the rates/costs on the advertiser’s website. In addition, any queries sent through on the contact form within the listing are sent through to the business/organisation pretty swiftly after receiving it and we do know that in most cases, they in turn, respond quickly to the person making the enquiry.
Advertising big items
YEI member: Why does YEI advertise big ticket items which pensioners cannot afford?
YEI: YEI has a large, diverse audience (diverse in terms of demographics and LSM groups). To cater for all of these groups, YEI does need to showcase all organisations who have an offer specifically for pensioners, be it a small ticket product or a big ticket item. We do understand and are sensitive to the fact that many pensioners are not in a position to afford a big-ticket item such as travel related trips. However, it is interesting to note that there is immense interest in travel related trips.
YEI member: Why are Pensioner Day discounts on specific days of the week, or mid-week? We are pensioners every day – our income rarely changes.
YEI: The history behind senior/pensioner discounts is that society sees seniors on a fixed income with limited assets – and this needs to see them through for an unknown number of years. In order for seniors to afford the essentials and possibly the little extras, corporates and businesses offer discounts to this age group. Businesses are certainly not obligated to offer pensioner discounts, but many do. It appears to have become the norm that businesses offer a senior discount during their quieter periods, normally a mid-week day. Some businesses have done away with their pensioner discount days due to exploitation of the system.
YEI will undertake to speak to those corporates with whom we are in contact to them about the feasibility of having Pensioners Day everyday. Ultimately, it is a corporate decision, but we can bring about the awareness that this is something that pensioners feel strongly about. With the economy the way it is, who knows? Maybe some will reconsider.
You may also be pleased and interested to know that Economists are in agreement that SA retailers should try to tap into the spending power of the growing number of pensioners by creating special pensioner days or pensioner discounts. Pensioners account for about 10% of SA’s gross domestic product (GDP), thus playing a very important role in the SA economy. In total, SA’s pension assets are about the 8th largest in the world.
Requests from YEI members
A YEI member is asking for help.
Tina Main says: : Hi. Can someone help? I was told my Grandfather worked as a chef at The Doll House in the late 1940’s. His name was Henry Nelson. He passed from a drowning in December 1949. Any information would be so appreciated
If you knew Henry Nelson, please advise in the comments below and send an email to email@example.com and YEI will pass this on to Tina Main.

GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT GROWING OLD:
1) Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
2) Forget the health food. I need all the preservatives I can get.
3) When you fall down, you wonder what else you can do while you’re down there.
4) You’re getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking chair that you once got from a roller coaster.
5) It’s frustrating when you know all the answers, but nobody bothers to ask you the questions.
6) Time may be a great healer, but it’s a lousy beautician.
7) Wisdom comes with age, but sometimes age comes alone.
We look forward to seeing your good chuckles and funnies.
Until next month…
