News for seniors – local, international, and YEI specific
Greetings YEI readers
Letter from the Editor
I’m sure we are all wondering how long this crisis will last, when will the world open up to us, how will this crisis affect us in the long run, and will this change the way we do things forever?
One thing is certain, we have a steep road to climb before we get back to normality, whatever normality may mean these days. The deeper we get into the crisis, the better we will understand it. Only then, and armed with knowledge and hindsight, will we be able to see a clearer way forward.
We all continue to go through a difficult time. Everyone, irrespective of who they are, where they are, what they do, goes through difficulties. You may be on your own which in itself is a tough road. You are likely not seeing your families, your grandchildren, and many seniors live for their grandchildren and their families. Challenges make us stronger in the end, and YEI is here to share knowledge, ideas, resources, what’s working, what’s not. Checking out the YEI website, the newsletter, the Facebook page on a regular basis will be invaluable to you. If we are not covering it, let us know. And complete the survey, so we know what you like, don’t like and what you would like to see.
Going forward, YEI will promote “local is lekker”. Consider supporting all of those local businesses who have in the past brought you great pensioner specials and we hope will be in a position to carry on. Your support to these businesses is crucial to their survival. Yes, life may well be different in the short term, perhaps in the long-term, but change is always good and already the environment is saying “thank you” in so many different ways.
If any YEI member needs support, in any way, please let us know. If we are unable to assist, we will try to point you in the right direction. The South African Government and its social partners are implementing interventions to address the immediate vulnerability of the poor who rely on social assistance to survive. However, even when the nationwide lockdown is lifted, effects will be felt for some time to come.
As President Cyril Ramaphosa said “We are at a point in our battle with the pandemic where complacency could prove disastrous. I call on each and every one to remain vigilant, to continue to abide by the regulations, and to keep safe and keep others safe.”
Stay safe and all the best
Marilyn, YEI Editor
