AVBOB has provided specialist funeral insurance and burial services
for 100 years.
AVBOB is no ordinary business. It is a business with a long history of caring for people. For the past 100 years, AVBOB has provided specialist funeral insurance and burial services to South Africans from all walks of life. On1 August 2017, AVBOB launched a poetry competition to demonstrate our brand promise ‘We’re here for you.’
AVBOB’s Poetry competition was an overwhelming success as 20 774 poems were entered from all South Africa’s 11 official languages. The winning poems covered the themes of Love, Hope, Birth and Death, and bravely articulate the inner life of countless amateur poets across South Africa. Poets, as young as 10 and as old as 97, submitted their poems for approval on the website. The winners of the competition were announced on 20 June 2018 at a gala evening and prize-giving event.
The AVBOB Poetry competition signals a celebration of the human spirit, and of the power of poetry to heal and transform – especially when one experiences the loss of a loved one. Loss makes people vulnerable, whether it is the death of a loved one – a mother, a father, a child – and, consequently, we are at a loss for words to say goodbye. And if we do not have the words to send off our loved ones, the ritual of parting is muted. How does one put years of memories into a five minute speech and express themselves fully of a life lived and a life to be celebrated.
AVBOB’s poetry website (www.avbobpoetry.co.za), which was born out of the Poetry Competition, offers an abundance of poems to give you the words you need to express yourself in your time of loss and despair. The poems can also be used on all funeral pamphlets, posters, banners and presentations that are printed for a funeral service.
In this, AVBOB’s centenary year, the Poetry Competition marks a profound demonstration of AVBOB’s commitment to the communities in which we operate, of our willingness to give more, and of our ability to provide emotional and intellectual upliftment for all South Africans. Our slogan promises “We’re here for you”, but because actions speak louder than words, we trust that efforts like these show that we sincerely care for you.
A selection of 100 poems in each language category was selected to be published in an anthology titled I Wish I’d Said. The anthology can be ordered at www.naledi.online or 078 648 8616, and is available from most good bookstores. Alternatively, SMS the word ‘poem’ to 41199 (at a standard cost of R1.50 per SMS) to have it posted to you at a total cost of R200.
