Living for a century is a milestone that needs to be celebrated and honoured.
As Maria landed up having a lonesome lockdown birthday,
let’s all reach out and wish Maria
a very Happy 100th birthday
It wasn’t quite the planned birthday celebration, as family members and friends all living in lockdown were not able to attend what should have been a big event. However, nothing has ever daunted Maria, a keen baker, and she decided to do what she has always done, and baked her cake herself. Family and friends will celebrate the milestone after lockdown.
Maria Oberholz lives in Helingenhaus in Germany. Her family lived in South Africa for many years and Maria came to visit 32 times for three months at a time. During her visits, Maria fell in love with South Africa and has become well known to YEI.
Maria, endearingly known as Oma, was born on 2 April, 1920, in Neersen, near Krefeld in Germany, Maria was brought up on a farm. She married at the end of the war in 1945 and moved to Heiligenhaus, near Düsseldorf. Maria had two children, one of whom sadly died four years ago. She is now a very proud grandmother and great-grandmother of one beautiful 2-year old.
Maria says that her secret to longevity is eating healthily and working hard. She has always looked after herself and eats little meat and a lot of vegetables. She loves gardening, swimming and the sauna. Her one vice is baking and she only eats cakes that she has made herself.
Let’s all wish Maria a resounding Happy 100th birthday!!
