SA Seniors – the flu vaccination has never been more important
Clicks is offering flu vaccines for the 2021 winter season.
While the flu vaccine will not prevent you from catching Coronavirus, getting the flu vaccination will ensure that your immune system is fighting fit
The traditional winter flu season fast approaches. Thanks to the wearing of masks, social/physical distancing, the various levels of lockdown and the constant use of hand sanitizers and the washing of hands, it did not appear as though the flu season actually arrived in 2020.
However, one case of flu has already been detected in the Western Cape, according to the Institute For Communicable Diseases.
As mentioned in a Clicks article in 2020, a flu vaccine is unlikely to stop you from contracting Covid-19. However, a US study in Michigan found that people who were vaccinated against flu during the last flu season were significantly less likely to test positive for Covid-19. And the patients who did contract Covid-9, who had received the flu vaccination, were found to have fewer complications. Further studies have linked the flu vaccine to lower Covid-19 mortality rates.
Clicks is offering the four-strain Vaxigrip Tetra flu vaccine for R115 (cash price). The retailer says its vaccine provides broader protection against current flu strains.
Clicks said it expects heightened demand for the shots and has ramped up its capacity to administer the vaccine. It is offering vaccinations at more than 200 Clicks clinics as well as selected Clicks pharmacies.
Waheed Abdurahman, a pharmacist at Clicks, said getting the flu shot is an imperative conservation measure to reduce the burden felt by healthcare workers during the pandemic. “The flu shot is not effective against Covid-19, but will help protect against the flu which can weaken the immune system and lower your defense against Covid-19 infection. It is especially important for those who have a co-morbidity or chronic condition, such as asthma,” Abdurahman said.
The flu vaccination is now available at 195 Clicks clinics
