Honey
Honey has been used as a natural remedy for centuries. High quality honey contains high levels of anti-oxidants and antiseptic properties and as such is an important tool to boosting your immunity during times of stress and illness. It can also be used to assist in the treatment of amongst others High blood pressure, high cholesterol, certain burn wounds, foot ulcers and as a common cough remedy. Honey is also a natural alternative to sugar but it’s important to keep in mind that even with this healthier option, less is still more.
(Keep in mind, that certain cheaper types of honey may be adulterated with plain syrup. Although honey adulteration is illegal in most countries, it remains a widespread problem. So maybe keep your purchases local)
Turmeric
Turmeric may be the most effective nutrional supplement in existence and many studies have shown that it has major benefits for your body and brain. It contains compound called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin. It has anti-inflamatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. While inflammation is incredibly important in your body because it helps fight foreign invaders and has a role in repairing damage in your body it becomes a problem when it becomes chronic and attacks your body’s own tissue. Scientists now believe that chronic, low-level inflammation plays a major role in almost every chronic, Western disease. This includes heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer’s and various degenerative conditions *
Therefore, anything that can help fight chronic inflammation is of potential importance in preventing and even treating these diseases.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is believed to have various healthful properties, including antimicrobial and antioxidant effects. What’s more, many say it may offer health benefits, such as aiding weight loss, reducing cholesterol, lowering blood sugar levels, and improving the symptoms of diabetes.
Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar also contains a substance called mother, which consists of strands of proteins, enzymes, and friendly bacteria that give the product a murky appearance.
Some people believe that the mother is responsible for most of its health benefits, although there are currently no studies to support this.
Garlic
Garlic grows in many parts of the world and is a popular ingredient in cooking due to its strong smell and delicious taste. However, throughout ancient history, the main use of garlic was for its health and medicinal properties #
Scientists now know that most of its health benefits are caused by sulfur compounds formed when a garlic clove is chopped, crushed or chewed. Cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes are the world’s biggest killers. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is one of the most important drivers of these diseases.
It is believed that garlic supplements to have a significant impact on reducing blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.
Lemons
The health benefits of lemons are probably due to its high vitamin C content that helps improve the skin quality, encourages weight loss, improves digestion, and acts as a breath freshener. Lemons may also help with the treatment of various ailments including constipation, dental problems, throat infections, fever, respiratory disorders, and high blood pressure. We make a tea of lemon juice, teaspoon of honey, pinch of turmeric and cayenne pepper and a thumb size of grated ginger…. pour very hot water, leave to steep, strain and drink – gets rid of phlegm and sinus/snotty noses – we swear by it – we also add all of the above to our veggie soups and chicken soups! We add parsley to almost every meal too….. so I wholeheartedly agree with Marcelle Warner’s comments! Sore throat – teaspoon of organic raw honey and a squeeze of lemon juice. Why spend a fortune on chemicals when the organic, healthy options are right there and so much, much cheaper!
