Arranging a dignified funeral for a loved one is a daunting task and in this day and age where goods and services are expensive and money is in short supply it’s even more challenging. It is important to have funeral cover with a reputable insurer which will give you peace of mind and allow you to focus on those things that really matter rather than running around trying to raise contributions to pay for the funeral. When a loved one passes away you do not need the added burden of funeral costs and choosing a funeral service provider.
To ensure you get adequate insurance cover, do your research and consider the following important tips:
- Essentially, you have to know what you will require in advance. Funeral requirements vary from family to family and is often dictated by customs, tradition or cultural norms and standards. Such requirements could have a significant impact on funeral costs.
- Obtain cost estimates from various service providers and/or suppliers to determine the cost of a funeral. Take into account the cost of flowers, catering, casket/coffin, transport of the deceased, family cars, groceries, etc.
- Insurance companies take a number of factors into consideration to determine the monthly cost or the premium of the policy. Factors such as the number of and ages of the insured lives, the term of the policy, the insured values and type of policy etc will determine the monthly premiums you have to pay.
- As a policyholder you should also consider the terms and conditions of the policy, as well as matters such as the waiting period, commencement date of your policy and whether your premiums increase, and if so, when and by how much.
Finally, it is important to know what the benefits are. For example, AVBOB offers *Free funeral benefits over and above the value of the policy. These benefits include a *free basic funeral valued at approximately R11 000, free transport of the deceased within the borders of South Africa and R2 500 cash upfront when the funeral is arranged to assist with funeral expenses and may be used in whatever way the family deems fit. *These benefits however only apply if AVBOB Funeral Service conducts the funeral and if the policy has been in force for a period of 24 months or longer.
On 15 August 2015, when AVBOB turned 100 years, , the AVBOB CEO Mr Frik Rademan announced a Special Bonus of R3,5 billion to be allocated to policyholders, through the newly established “AVBOB Reward Account” (ARA). The ARA is a unique benefit that becomes payable when the main insured person reaches the age of 65 on condition that the policy has been in force for at least 10 years. Every qualifying member will receive a share of the R3,5 billion, that will be credited to their ARA. In the unfortunate event that the main insured person passes away prior to age 65, the full ARA balance will be paid out..
Turning 100 is a significant achievement that not many companies can attest to achieving and AVBOB is extremely proud to have reached this milestone. We look forward to providing our members with many more years of care and service.
