Water crisis in Cape Town as Day Zero approaches
There are many elderly and vulnerable folk who will need assistance should Cape Town reach Day Zero in this water crisis that we are facing. Day Zero is the stark reality we face when dams are down to 13.5%, most taps will be turned off and residents will have to queue for water. Xanthea Limberg, the Mayco member in charge of water has said “We are engaging with national and provincial government, businesses, communities and NGOs to support us to care for the elderly and those with disabilities”.
You’ve Earned It has approached the City of Cape Town to find out what measures are being put in place to assist the elderly and the disabled. This information will be widely distributed once it is received.
In addition, YEI will be exploring how we can assist South African seniors caught up in this crisis, and we ask you, the YEI members, to come up with possible solutions and ideas on how you can assist your fellow seniors. Your advertisement will be brought to the attention of other YEI members in this forum – From the Editor’s Desk – in the regular fortnightly newsletter. Please click here to view the YEI Noticeboard.
Become a YEI contributor in 2018
At the outset, we need to say – you don’t need to be a great writer! YEI will edit any stories that are submitted.
Do you have a story to share with the YEI community? Have you accomplished something remarkable like changing careers in your 50s/60s, publishing a book, having art exhibited in a gallery. It could be a story about an inspirational senior in your community, it could be the story of your bucket list trip, or about the volunteering you have recently undertaken, your travels during a gap year. It could be a tribute to a wonderful carer.
To submit a story, or to ask any more questions, email us on firstname.lastname@example.org
Did you retire at the end of 2017?
If so, YEI wishes you all of the very best for your retirement! Don’t forget to email YEI with your new email address, so you can keep receiving our fortnightly newsletters.

Feedback from YEI competition winners
David Smith was one of the winners of a Spur voucher. He had this to say:
Thanks so much for the Spur voucher – it’s not often that I win a prize! My story was about the great meal I had at the Golden Spur, many years ago. Well, I took the same girl to the Michigan Spur to redeem the voucher. Click here to view more….
