Walkerbouts Country Retreat and Pub’s relaxed and hospitable atmosphere makes it a veritable home-from-home where guests can unwind from the stresses of urban living.
Walkerbouts Country Retreat and Pub is located in the village of Rhodes in the Eastern Cape Highlands and has six comfortable en-suite bedrooms with either showers or baths. All rooms have a double plus single beds.
The cosy pub, whose walls could tell many stories, is a gathering point for both visitors and locals. Our adjoining restaurant provides wholesome country fare. As well as more specialised victuals such as vegetarian meals that can be prepared by prior arrangement. Our specialities are “build-your-own” pizzas with home-made bases and pizza sauce using home-grown herbs from our veggie garden. Hearty breakfasts for guests and light lunches from our pub menu round off the dining options.
Rhodes is close to many of the mountain passes in the area, the most well-known of which is the Naudesnek Pass. Its central location lends itself to day outings where “pass collectors” can do a variety of loops returning to the village each afternoon.
The village of Rhodes is more than 1800m above sea level and the highest nearby peak, Ben McDhui, soars to 3001m above sea level. Barkly East is 60km away on a narrow and winding gravel road that must be driven with care. Rhodes, with its turn-of-the-previous-century architecture and shady, tree-lined streets has retained its Victorian charm. It was proclaimed a National Monument in 1997 to ensure that this is maintained.
